September Birthstone
Birthstone for September is Lapis Lazuli.
Interesting to start off with, it is not a mineral or a gemstone but rather a rock. ie an aggregate of several minerals mainly lazurite, pyrite and calcite.
It appears Blue to violetish Blue with golden flecks.
Lapis has been mined in Afghanistan for more than 6000 years.
Hardness of 5 to 6 makes it only modestly tough and susceptible to attack by acids and damage from ultrasonic cleaning.

Generally the colour and richness of Lapis itself has been associated with Authority & Royalty.
